The United States government says it’s ready to begin military cooperation with Fiji now that elections have been held.
Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific, Daniel Russel says the US Embassy in Suva will co-ordinate all aspects of military ties between the 2 countries.
“The obstacle to the legal ability of the US to participate and cooperate in military exchanges, sales and other traditional forms of military relations, has been removed with the return of democracy.”
Following the events of December 2006, the US government suspended cooperation on a number of front, including ties with the Fiji military.
