Unit to oversee rebuild process

July 19, 2016 1:16 am

A Construction Implementation Unit will be overseeing the process of rebuilding damaged infrastructure from Tropical Cyclone Winston earlier this year.

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says a lot of the pre-construction work for this infrastructure has already begun with the help of the Fiji Institute of Engineers.

“There’s also the reconstruction of various government facilities; agriculture stations, civil servants quarters out in the rural areas. That entire rebuild costs about $205m and the bulk of that sits in head 50 and goes to tender in the next couple of weeks.”

Sayed-Khaiyum made these comments at the signing of two loan agreements with the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank yesterday; amounting to US$100m.

The 2016-2017 Budget has an allocation of FJD $205 million for the reconstruction process and around $130m for the reconstruction of schools.
