Unhealthy food choices a concern

Unhealthy food choices by school children is of major concern for the Education Ministry and the health experts.

Speaking at the World Food Day celebrations in Suva yesterday, Fiji National University’s Dr Pragya Singh, spoke of children’s food choices, which were not always healthy.

She says they want to create awareness around food problems amongst primary school students to strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.

Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary Alison Burchell says children need to eat healthy, and say no to junk and unhealthy foods.

This year’s celebration was held at the Samabula Primary School, which is one of the first pilot schools in Fiji to implement certain programs in creating awareness and action to ensure food security.
