United Nations Women is supporting the improvement of market infrastructure around the country as eighty percent of market vendors are women.

UN Women Representative, Nicolas Burniat says this is done to ensure that they respond to the needs of women vendors.

Burniat says this is part of the UN Women’s Market for Change Project in the Pacific.

“In some markets we support the government in building accommodation centres, renovating sanitation facilities, ensuring there is access to clean water or simply sometimes extending a roof so that you know market vendors that come over the weekend don’t have to sell in the middle of the streets, exposed to the rain or the sun.”

Burniat says the UN Women has so far supported the renovation of eight markets around the country.

He adds they are also working on the financial literacy and the economic empowerment of women market vendors.
