June 5, 2017 6:33 pm

The UN Oceans conference will officially begin today in New York with the aim to save our seas.

Co-hosted by Fiji and Sweden, the conference will open with a full traditional ceremony, the Veiqaravi Vakaturaga.

President of the UN General Assembly and Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the UN – Peter Thomson says the conference will be a call to action to return our oceans to some semblance of sustainability.

“Climate action, ocean action, these are the two imperatives of our time for the 21st century, if we don’t meet these challenges, then our grandchildren’s security will be in jeopardy, so we’re doing the responsible thing and I think that this is the time when all Fijians can be proud of our role.”

He adds that the conference will highlight real data on the state on our oceans and seas and what is needed going forward.

The one week conference will aim to secure voluntary commitments from the countries involved much like the 2015 Paris Agreement.
