UN committed to support the Pacific Island Countries

The Pacific region is on the front line of climate change and is important allies in the fight against it.

United Nation’s Secretary General Antonio Guterres while speaking during the Interactive High-Level Political Dialogue says he witnessed the Pacific’s leadership during the climate conference last year in Poland.

Guterres says without Fiji’s advocacy the other leaders would not have recognized the need to address the damage caused by climate change.

“United Nations is strongly committed to supporting your response for climate change and the addressing of negative impacts that they have put your cultures and very existence at risk. Your commitment to adaptation, your needs for adaptation requires so many international support as climate change is running faster than your efforts.”

Today’s dialogue was focused on the increasingly severe impacts of climate change and the stress on the world’s Oceans and seas.

The UNSG is visiting the Pacific region for the first time as secretary general.
