Two people died of electrocution in the past three weeks

Two people have been electrocuted in the past three weeks.

Energy Fiji Limited Chief Executive Hasmukh Patel says carelessness and ignorance of the EFL Safety Act played a part in these deaths.

Patel confirms a Year-10 student died a few weeks ago because of a faulty extension cord.

“A form four female student passed away while using an extension cord to connect a washing machine. The extension cord, that was damaged and she came into contact with live part of the extension cord.”

In the most recent incident, a five-year-old boy was electrocuted in Nakasi while playing in a temporary shed which was erected for a family function over the weekend.

His foot had come into contact with an iron pipe that had become electrified.

 

“Due to the inclement weather conditions that prevailed over the weekend, there were some heavy winds as well and because the roofing iron had not been tied down, it started to fly and in the process, it flew up a contacted our low voltage powerline with the other end still on the roof.”

Police confirm the boy was taken to the Bhanabhai Health Centre in Makoi, Nasinu for treatment.

Police are investigating.
