The government has presented certificates to two civil Marriage Celebrants in Suva.

The two, social worker Sulochna Wati Sharma and Eminioni Leka Beqa an electrician on Beqa island are now fully licensed under Section 5A of the Marriage Act to solemnize marriages in Fiji.

Presenting the certificates, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum says this gives them the opportunity to perform marriage ceremonies wherever people want it conducted.

“We had amended the law a few years ago where a person could apply and be able to fork out a sum of $3000 and is able to get a certificate which allows him or her the opportunities to be able to conduct marriage ceremonies wherever people want that conducted and off course charge a fee for that too (thats up to them) and as you know Fiji is also becoming a marriage destination.”

The government has so far awarded six celebrants certificates to allow them to conduct wedding ceremonies.
