Two former female employees of the then Public Works Department convicted of several counts of causing a loss and one count each of abuse of office were today sentenced to 6 years imprisonment by the Suva High court.
50-year-old Amelia Vunisea and 35-year-old Laisa Halafi are already serving prisoners.
Vunisea charged with 12 counts of causing a loss and one count of abuse of office and Halafi charged with 13 counts of causing a loss and one count of abuse of office had pleaded guilty to their charges.
The court heard that between January and May, 2010, Vunisea and Halafi facilitated the processing of false payments of over $30,000 to Professional Stationeries in abuse of the authority of their office.
High court Judge Justice Salesi Temo said that their actions caused monetary loss to the Public Works Department.
