Twenty new police posts to be established

The Fiji Police Force will be establishing 20 more new police posts.

Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni QIliho says under the review of the Fiji Police Force, they have identified areas where the police posts are to be set up.

This is despite the fact that the police posts at Suva South, Suva Point and Koronivia were closed down this year.

According to Qiliho, only some communities need police posts more than the others.

“We are looking at 20 new police posts. And, the Police Posts will not be like the ones we currently have now. If you go to Police posts you will find only one person on duty there because the manpower is stretched. What we are looking at is to have a few people on duty to be able to go out on a beat, to attend to reports rather than the current practice where the person in the police post is more like a telephone operator who receives the complaint and conveys it to the mother station to react to what is happening.”

Qiliho believes, the police posts will not entirely stop crime, but only help, adding it is the communities who play the bigger role.
