A tsunami alert has been issued for people living along the coastal low lying areas of Fiji.

The alert comes after a seven point zero magnitude earthquake was recorded in New Caledonia before mid-day today.

The Mineral Resources Department’s – Seismology Department released a statement advising the public – particularly all residents living in low lying coastal areas to take necessary precautions.

The Department is urging the people to be on standby and alert for the next available update.

According to the Department there is ample time to prepare as usually the real threat exists up until three hours of a tsunami arrival.

The statement says the Seismology Section will continue to closely monitor the situation during this important period of time until the threat is over.
