Tsunami warning system to be enhanced

July 10, 2017 5:05 am

The Fiji Meteorological Services together with relevant stakeholders are now working together to enhance the tsunami warning system around the country.

While addressing the Fiji Met and its stakeholders, International Tsunami Information Centre Director, Laura Kong says capacity in assessing tsunami threats should be further developed to avoid last minute reports.

“It’s about strengthening the operational procedures for tsunami warning centers and tsunami responses agencies, we want to make sure that everyone is working together and we want to make sure that when the next tsunami warning comes we can’t response quickly and the public can know what to do and be very actionable immediately.”

Kong says the Pacific Tsunami warning centre has stopped issuing tsunami warnings and watches for the Pacific including Fiji and these has increased responsibilities for the Fiji Met.

The week long training will further upgrade knowledge and capacity for regional staff to make sound warning decisions, issue clear tsunami warning and optimize public response.
