Tsunami advisory issued after Chile earthquake

The Mineral Resources Department has issued an advisory that coastal areas in Fiji can expect tsunami waves up to a metre high after an 8.3 magnitude earthquake in Chile about 3 hours ago.

The MRD says the advisory is issued to advise the general public – especially coastal dwellers of the possibility of tsunami waves.

At this time, the waves are expected to reach Fiji’s shores by about midnight tonight.

The Seismology Section advices that no immediate action or movement need to be taken as of now.

It adds that the maximum extent of the waves may vary due to uncertainties in the forecast.

The impact is likely be much smaller than indicated.

However a 3 metre wave has been generated in Chile and residents in low lying coastal areas are advised to be on the watch and get updates from the media.
