A tsunami advisory and watch is still in effect for residents living along the coastal areas.
The Mineral Resources Department and Seismology section says it will provide more updates in case of any further development.
The advisory comes after an 8.3 magnitude earthquake hit Chile early this afternoon.
The MRD says that based on all available data a major tsunami is not expected to strike Fiji.
However sea level changes and strong currents may occur along all coasts that could be a hazard to swimmers and boaters as well as to persons near the shore.
The seismology section will continue to closely monitor the situation and will provide further updates.
