Tropical Cyclone to develop in the next few days

A tropical depression that is expected to develop into a Category One cyclone is moving towards Fiji.

The Nadi weather office says this is predicted to occur in the next 72 hours.

Fiji Meteorological Services Director Ravindra Kumar says the depression which is to the Northwest of Fiji is expected to intensify in the next few days.

“We further expect TD07F to continue intensifying into a deep depression in the next 24-48 hours and possibly become a category one cyclone in the next 72 hours. Therefore the chances of developing a tropical cyclone in the next 72 hours is high.”

Kumar says more rain is expected and chances of flooding is very high.

“Strong wind warning is in force for most parts of the country, secondly, the flood alert remains in force for Vanua Levu and Taveuni rivers.”

Strong winds is expected to come with this.

“We expect wind to gradually increase where we will see the Northly winds about to 40-55km/hr gusting to 65km/hr and as we go.”

The weather office says the path the weather system will take is uncertain at the stage and more details on the development on the depression will be released tomorrow.
