The Mineral Resources Department says the people on Kadavu can expect tremors to continue to be felt.

However, they are not expected to increase in strength.

Director Mineral Resources Malakai Finau says these events will be much more frequent.

“More important for the villages to know that the current strength determination for these vents are not that high and also would be good for them to identify evacuation grounds nearby for them to go to.”

Since this morning, three more tremors have been felt in districts of Nakasaleka and Rakiraki…bringing the total number of tremors felt and recorded so far to sixty four.

Finau says Fiji’s location sitting on the Pacific Ring of Fire makes it more prone such incidents.

Affected villages in Kadavu have been updated on the findings of the Department.

“We are continuing our analysis and our assessment of the tremors that have been experienced by the villagers in Nakasaleka and we intend to deploy another team to Nakasaleka shortly to follow up on some leads that we have on our investigation.”

Villages in the Nakasaleka and Rakiraki District are urged to identify possible evacuation grounds in case the tremors trigger something bigger.
