Transgender people continue to be ignored: Vulavou

November 20, 2018 3:46 am

Statistics have revealed that the number of reported murders of trans-people globally has increased this year.

Speaking during the transgender day of remembrance, Executive Director for Pacific Sexual and Gender Diversity Network, Isikeli Vulavou highlighted that gender nonconformity is still used as an excuse for harassment, violence and even murder of transgender people.

Vulavou says transgender people continue to be ignored and discriminated leading to their invisibility in the society.

“The Trans Murder Monitoring data for the trans day of remembrance 2018 update has revealed a total of 368 cases of reported killing of trans and gender – diverse people between 1st of October 2018 and 30th September 2018.”

Vulavou says there’s a need to raise the visibility of transgender and non-confirming people to address issues their community faces.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Police Commissioner has assured the forum that they will review all the reports compiled by the LGBTQI community.
