Around 4500 presiding officers and their assistants who will be part of the 2018 General election will begin their training with the Elections Office this week.

Presiding officers will be responsible for ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted conduct of polling at their respective venues.

Acting Director Strategic Development and Communications, Edwin Nand, says presiding officers will participate in one day training sessions between February 8th and March 3rd.

“We’re targeting 25 participants for each raining session and based on the number of polling stations we will be training round 4500 presiding officers and assistant presiding officer by March 3rd, 2018. This week alone on week 1 we expect to collectively train 625 officials. Following the successful completion election recruitment drive that ended last month we received 1716 applications.”

Nand says they had begun half-day trainings while recruitment was ongoing to identify individuals who qualify for training as Presiding and Assistant Presiding Officers.

He adds applicants were selected on merit after sitting a test in the half-day Election Officials training.

Appointments for Presiding Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers will only be made at the end of the full day training session based on their tests results and assessment.
