As we are well into the festive season, traders have been warned to be compliant.

The Fijian Competition and the Consumer Commission says they have taken 46 traders to court who have continuously disregarded the law.

General Manager Operations Senikavika Jiuta says these traders were penalized for overcharging customers, failing to mark expiry dates, selling expired items, not issuing receipts.

“Traders, supermarkets I would say are non-compliant to basic things such as not displaying their prices, no displaying it on a prominent position, I mean the place where the general public can see it, so not only for price-controlled items but also for non-controlled price items.”

Consumer Council Chief Executive, Seema Shandil also shared the same sentiments.

“If you have put special items on specials prices our system should be updated ASAP so why do you always say that it is an error what we need to do is that as soon as the items are put on special the amendments in the system should be made simultaneously.”

Consumers have also been reminded to exercise caution while shopping.
