Traders issued spot fines

February 29, 2016 12:37 am

A number of traders including hardware suppliers and supermarkets have been issued three thousand dollar spot fines for breach of pricing laws.

Minister for Industry and Trade Faiyaz Koya says these traders are breaching price laws for products such as batteries, candles, torches, bottled water, hurricane lanterns and building materials.

Koya says it has been noted that some traders have exploited consumers following Cyclone Winston.

He adds these practices are not acceptable and will not be tolerated by the Fijian Government.

The Minister says some traders have been found selling cyclone damaged items such as frozen goods and electrical appliances that are spoilt, and should not be sold at all.

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism is working with Fiji Commerce Commission, inspecting retail outlets to ensure that the traders involved in such unethical practices are punished by spot fines and/or prosecution.
