The Fijian experience transforming Peace Corps Volunteers

May 13, 2018 5:03 am

The Peace Corps Program has been in existence in Fiji since 1968 and over the last 50 years close to 3000 Americans have lived and worked in the country.

Celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year, the Country Director for Peace Corps Fiji Dennis McMahon says as part of the celebrations is the acknowledgment of how much Fijian families have nurtured and affected Americans for the better.

“The Fijian families welcome our volunteers with open arms, open hearts. They develop these lasting relationships and this has a trans-formative effect not just on the communities that these volunteers serve but on the volunteers themselves.”

The 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps Fiji program will be celebrated at the end of June.

In addition to a national exhibition, some volunteers that have previously served in Fiji since 1968 will return to celebrate Peace Corps Fiji’s half a century.
