Prominent representatives of the private sector have voice concerns regarding the National Federation Party’s promise to introduce tenure contracts in the private sector.
NFP candidate, Attar Singh while appearing on FBC’s talkback show Aaina for a debate with FijiFirst General Secretary, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum – says if they form the next government the NFP will introduce permanent contracts guaranteeing lifelong employment.
RC Manubhai, managing director, Bhavesh Kumar says rubbished this policy, claiming the promise of a lifetime employment is irrational.
“If this is imposed what will happen to the graduates and job-seekers? What would happen to the school leavers? The lifetime employment that will be enforced on us – the people who are not performing they will stay there and the productivity of the country will go down.”
Meanwhile, the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation is calling on the NFP to stop meddling in their domain and allow them to carry out their work as they have been doing.
Chief executive, Nesbitt Hazelman is asking the NFP to stop making promises as such because they are ready to vigorously fight to protect contract based employment.
“The private sector is a hands-off limit when it comes to managing its own affairs. Under the ERP we have the right to manage our own organizations. That right means we can recruit, select and train anybody we like.”
Hazelman says Singh’s promise could be a far cry to get the trade unions involved in collective bargaining in the private sector.
