Ten years imprisonment for illicit drug cultivator

A man from Wainiviti Settlement, in Nalawa Ra has been sentenced to ten years imprisonment for unlawfully cultivating illicit drugs.

Lemeki Tabusoi cultivated 8.6 kilograms marijuana in his farm in 2014.

The court was told that upon receiving information, three police officers from the Rakiraki Police Station raided Tabusoi’s farm and uprooted 127 plants of cannabis sativa.

While sentencing the man, Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge said illicit drug menace has become a major social problem in the society therefore those who are found guilty of planting marijuana must be severely punished.

The Judge also raised concern that this addictive drug has the potential to destroy the younger generation.

Tabusoi can apply for parole after serving 8 years imprisonment.
