Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the government is committed to mainstreaming persons with disabilities.
Speaking at the awards ceremony for sign language graduation, Sayed-Khaiyum said that is why their rights are enshrined in the new constitution.
He says apart from declaring equipment used by persons with disabilities VAT and duty free, they are also working on making our roads user friendly.
These children will now also be able to gain tertiary education as the Tertiary Education Loan Scheme has a budgetary allocation for them- a law passed by the parliament a few weeks ago.
“We now will also fund persons with disability who also want to go to university – we will also pay for that. That I think is very very important because you know that persons with disabilities should be able to go to university and should be able to contribute not just for their own personal development but to the country as well.”
Sayed-Khaiyum added that digital television that will start in eighteen months time, will also have sign language on the corner of the screen.
