Teachers planning to take Family Care Leave so they can be part of the Fiji Trades Union Congress protest this week have been advised not to.
FBC News understands teachers have been told to apply for leave, however Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says they should not abuse the process.
Sayed-Khaiyum says teachers need to be responsible and follow the law when raising grievances.
Well you know i think it’s the question of everybody being responsible and everybody following the law, you know we have incidences in the past and i don’t want to dwell in this essentially but family care leave has been given by government with a lot of goodwill
The teachers want to raise issues about contracts, pay rates, and other matters, however Sayed-Khaiyum says they should not take such things into their own hands.
Meanwhile, Fiji Teachers Union General Secretary Agni Deo Singh says they support the protest and teachers should not be stopped from practicing their rights.
May be one day they will be told what time they will go to sleep and what time they should wake up and what to do at home and I find this very strange.
The Minister for Economy has also stated that it’s unfortunate that some union leaders are on a personal path.
