Sawakasa villagers evacuate

22 people are currently taking shelter at the evacuation centre in Sawakasa, village two in Tailevu.

This as strong winds and heavy rain continue to be experienced in the area.

Resident Tamani Toby says they moved early this morning as winds began to pick up speed.

“Unsecured structures have been taken away by the wind, there are no causalities, our village hall has been activated as our evacuation centre. We have 18 females and four males in the evacuation centre with age groups ranging from one to 64 years old.”

He says at the moment, youth are going from house to house nailing up shutters.

They are also assisting families who may need to move to evacuation centres.

Sawakasa village two, has around 20 households with more than 80 residents.
