Tax payers warned to abide by the laws

The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service is warning taxpayers to abide by the tax laws or prepare to face the consequences.

This cautionary message comes as 1/3 of Fiji’s economy still remains black.

Black Economy is the part of a country’s economic activity which is unrecorded and untaxed by the government through its tax monitoring agency.

Chief Executive, Visvanath Das says non-compliance of tax is a leading contributor to the Black Economy.

“Here we are giving you a chance through voluntary compliance. Its better you get on board yourself because if we get you on board then be prepared to face the full brunt of the law.”

Das says while the FRCS is giving opportunities for Fijians to voluntarily comply with the tax laws.

Tougher fines and imprisonment laws have been introduced to encourage compliance.
