Suva-Nausori road widening project delays

November 17, 2017 7:22 pm

The Suva-Nausori four lane project has been delayed due to land acquisition issues, engineering problems and ground conditions at the site.

The project was scheduled to complete this year however the Fiji Roads Authority is now anticipating it to finish by the end of next year.

FRA Chief Executive Jonathan Moore says legal disputes especially in relation to land has contributed to the delay of this road widening project.

“In this case they taken a lot longer to sort out because there have been objections from the people where the land has been acquired from so we’ve got to resort to legal means in some cases to take the land. And some settlement issues on the road as it’s not a very soft ground there so we have to surcharge the ground to consolidate the material and make sure we get the right firm bases for the road.”

Moore says it hasn’t been an easy project to work on as it’s one of the major highway in the country and there’s a potential for more congestion which FRA is trying to alleviate.

“We’re looking at ways of maybe having smaller sections so the people are congested for a smaller time period in this small area to try and make it flow more smoothly.”

Commuters and motorists are advised to be patient with the road developments carried out in the Suva – Nausori corridor as the FRA works on completing this project by the end of next year.
