With Fiji’s focus resting on Climate Change, tourism partners have taken a leading role in developing strategies for a sustainable industry.

The South Pacific Tourism Organization and the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association signed an MOU today in a bid to further develop the tourism and private sector growth in Fiji.

SPTO Chief Executive, Chris Crocker says through the newly-formed partnership, a Sustainable Monitoring workshop will be held in Nadi and Suva next month.

“It’s a collaboration of partners which is to focus on about fifty private sector accommodation operators in Fiji. That is actually train them to collect data on measuring sustainable tourism.”

Crocker says there is also a need to develop awareness on sustainable tourism because it is a developing area in the Pacific.

He adds this can all be achieved through the agreement which will also allow the two parties to share information and resources to maximise growth in the industry.
