Minister for Fisheries Osea Naiqamu says sustainability is the key for Fiji to protect its fishing grounds.
Speaking at a fundraiser for the ‘Kawakawa’ and ‘Donu’ campaign, Naiqamu said healthy reefs and fisheries are critical for supporting the food and income needs of individuals.
“Indeed as a country we have deeply rely on our fisheries resources for our sustenance and also importantly our culture.”
Naiqamu says a fisheries study reveals that Fiji’s fish stocks have declined by 70% over the last 30 years.
He adds this is alarming and coastal and maritime communities should work together to preserve fish for future generations.
