A residence for young women who are survivors of domestic abuse will open up in Suva soon.

Fiji Women’s Crisis Center Coordinator Shamima Ali says the safe house is ready and only government is yet to endorse the ethical standard report before they start facilitating the accommodation for survivors.

Ali says the main purpose for the setup of the accommodation is to allow the women to live a life free from domestic violence.

“We do have high rates of violence against women and girls and that is why we are establishing that shelter, there will be two for domestic violence in other part of the country but this one is particularly for young women to acquire their full potential”

The FWCC will also assist with life skills by providing training and helping the women career wise.

The survivors will be accommodated until they are able to cater to their own needs and feel they are safe and self-sufficient.

Close to a million dollars was provided by the Australian government to set up the safe house.
