The Sugar Ministry says they plan to increase sugar production to 3 million tonnes this year.
Ministry’s director for policy and research Reshmi Kumari says, as a result, they are having a consultation with farmers around the country to hear their concerns.
“Our aim is to increase the cane production to 3 million tonnes. So farmers must contribute and they must attend because we are doing the consultation for the first time and if they do not attend, they will miss out. We will also not know what concerns they have in their areas especially each sector.”
Consultation for Lautoka, Nadi and Sigatoka areas starts tomorrow.
Consultation in the North will begin on the 5th of next month.
The ministry has already met growers from Penang and Rarawai Sectors.
