Subsidies for new shrimp species

June 29, 2014 7:13 pm

Government is thinking about subsidizing feed for the new shrimp species “Litopenaeus vannamei“ recently introduced to Fiji from Thailand.

Fisheries Officer in charge of the new species Anand Prasad told FBC News, they’ll provide feed for the first two months.

“At the moment the government is trying to formulate the feed using local ingredients so that we can try and feed these species and also we’re using the seaweed as binder so there is the possibility manufacturing the feed locally for this new species of shrimp”.

Prasad says, farming “Litopenaeus vannamei“ is similar to Tilapia and fresh water prawn.

The shrimps will be supplied to interested farmers who will also be trained by the Department of Fisheries.
