Submissions made to the Constitutional commission have questioned the need for the immunity clause in the new constitution.

The Commission has heard from a public hearing in Lami – that people need to be held accountable if the coup culture is to be removed.

Sepesa Niumatawalu says he has witnessed four coups in his lifetime.

“Granting of immunity to be built into the constitution – I do not agree completely. This has to be put out. It’s not to be put in there. If we grant immunity to be part of the constitution – the coup will continue in Fiji until God comes and takes us.”

Government has earlier stated that the immunity provision will be included in the new constitution.

But that hasn’t stopped Laisa Tuimaimoala from speaking against it.

“If there is a demand – we are supplying. We have to find a way to manage it. That’s the point I’m trying to make.”

The Constitution Commission meets at Ro Matanitobua House in Navua tomorrow.
