Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has urged young people to venture into career paths apart from white collar jobs.

Speaking at the School Chefs Competition Sayed-Khaiyum said Fiji’s tourism industry contributes up to 35% of Gross Domestic Product and there are many employment opportunities in the industry.

Sayed-Khaiyum also said teaching young people about healthy cooking styles will help combat Non-Communicable Diseases.

“If the Chef’s are trained at this early stage and the students become aware of it – some of them may not be chef’s like Sailesh Naidu, but even if they cook at home, even if they cook in a takeaway place or a canteen – at least they are made aware of how to cook food – what is a healthy dish to cook.”

Cuvu College won the first prize in the egg dish competition while Sigatoka Methodist won the vegetarian and chicken categories.

Sadhu Sangam Kuppuswamy Memorial College won the seafood and cake decorating categories.

More than 140 students from eleven schools pitted their skills in the cooking competition at Outrigger Fiji in Sigatoka yesterday.
