The Gospel School of Deaf today celebrated deaf awareness week.

This week focuses on promoting the positive aspects of people with hearing impairment, social inclusion and raising awareness about organizations that support those with hearing impairment.

Head Teacher, Nirmala Mudaliar says this week is an important one for their students.

“We’ve just taken this particular day just to make people aware of deafness and the deaf culture and the sign language and how important it is to communicate with the public at large using sign language.”

Mudaliar says their students are taught basic sign languages, the same way as other children in the primary school level.

She says students learn better in their schools rather than staying home or attending a normal primary school.
