Divers from the Police Special Response Unit have temporarily suspended the search for the vehicle underwater in the Rewa river.

The car that’s believed to have four people inside has been submerged in the river for more than 24 hours now.

Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro says the divers made one attempt, however, had to stop due to the strong currents.

She adds poor visibility also contributed to the search turning out negative.

Police say the strong current is also affecting their search efforts hence, they have called off the dive operations for the safety of their officers.

One of the four passengers is believed to be an 18-year-old man after his mother informed Police that the car may be hers.

It’s believed her son took his mother’s car when she was away from home.

Nine hours of diving operations were canceled yesterday after divers were unable to retrieve the vehicle due to the added risks of murky water and strong currents.

It’s believed the vehicle was traveling towards Nausori and tried to overtake another car, but the driver apparently lost control, veered off the road and ended up in the river.
