Strengthened Fiji-China ties unlocks opportunity for health sector

New areas of collaboration are being established between the Government and China to broaden the opportunities for development of Fiji’s health services.

Last week, a meeting was held between Health Minister Rosy Akbar and China’s ambassador to Fiji, Qian Bo to discuss the cooperation in the health area.

The Chinese government has donated 30 ambulances and the Navua Hospital has been greatly supported through Guangdong Medical Training Centre.

Akbar says another area of interest for the Ministry is the extension of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Guangdong province which was initially signed in 2015.

She expressed the Ministry’s interests to get specialists and promote local capacity building in areas of neurosurgeon, nephrologist cardiologists, pathologists, radiologists and diabetes specialists.

Meanwhile the Chinese ambassador says China is ready to provide assistance in dealing with dengue fever and Meningococcal disease in Fiji.
