June 18, 2019 12:25 pm

The Ministry of Agriculture will begin its stray dog control campaign in the Western Division tonight.

This follows the recent attack on Amari Whippy in Nadi by stray dogs.

Minister for Agriculture and Environment Dr. Mahendra Reddy says the intensive eight week stray dog control program will include baiting and trapping, neutering, education and awareness, licensing and registration.

“If we find that the dogs out in the open, if they don’t have a license or a collar, then the dogs will be trapped and we will take the dogs away. Female dogs will be neutered, we will look at possible owners for the dogs and if not, we will give it to SPCA, they could have the dogs and if we find out the owner of the dog and the dog is not licensed then the owner will be fined.”

Reddy says the program is implemented and coordinated by the Ministry together with the Ministry of Local Government, the Fiji Police Force, local municipalities and animal welfare organizations.

Members of the public are encouraged to contact their nearest Agriculture office, Police Station or Town Council for any assistance in the control of stray dogs in their respective areas.
