We still have people looking down on those that suffer from mental health related problems.
Senior Medical Officer at Saint Giles Hospital Elizabeth Koroivuki says societies need to accept those that are suffering from this issue and provide them with support.
" Stigma is still there. It’s very hard thing to break given how we have grown up, the culture the tradition but just to let people know that if they see something wrong with their family members, please get help so that they can also lead a normal life."
In Fiji, one in four adults suffer from some form of mental health issue while one in five youths suffer from mental health issues.
Minister for Health, Rosy Akbar says as a community we need to encourage people and provide them with the support so that they can lead a normal life free from discrimination.
