State to draft new cyber law

The government has approved the drafting of a cyber security law.

The law will guide and assist the Centre for Emergency Response Team (CERT) to combat cyber crimes in Fiji.

Acting Defence Minister Joketani Cokanasiga says the new law will assist CERT to monitor and report illicit cyber related activities to the Fiji Police Force.

Fiji is now facing a dramatic change in the security of our environment due to the emergence of globalisation and trade liberalisation that had created a borderless state bringing with it new security concerns and diverse implications like transnational crime, money laundering, human and drug trafficking and terrorism to name a few.

He says while Fiji is now facing a dramatic change in the security of our environment, we need to increase our international communication and collaboration.
