State to bear HIV drug cost

The state will pay for the treatment of all HIV cases in the country says the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

Ratu Epeli says more funds are expected to be used this year for the treatment of HIV.

He made the announcement when he launched the HIV awareness programme to the students of Adi Cakobau School in Sawani this morning

“Over the years $50,000 has been allocated to antiretroviral drugs. This year the amount is $90,000 but this could increase because government has already declared that it will foot the bill for all those who are HIV positive and those who agree to undertake HIV treatment.”

Fiji is the first country in the Pacific to undergo this initiative and the government is putting more emphasis t schools and the various communities.

Since 1989 Fiji has recorded 420 HIV confirmed cases.
