The standard of imported building materials will be closely monitored by the Construction Industry Council.

The Council claims some construction companies are buying low-cost materials and do not take into consideration its quality.

Council Chief Executive Vijay Naidu says they have selected a task group to monitor the importation of all building materials.

“The other important thing is standards, because we in Fiji are importing certain building materials which are sub-standard, they are cheaper and they could have an impact for the uses of those materials.”

Naidu says the council is working on ensuring that all construction companies comply with the building standards in Fiji.

Meanwhile, the licensing of construction companies is another major issue which the council is now working on.
