Women nowadays are paying a huge price of being in a violent relationship.

Fiji Women Crisis Centre Coordinator Shamima Ali claims this is because we live in a patriarchal society that champions with power and control.

Ali says young women should be aware of the people they socialize with.

“I always say to young women that if you have a boyfriend and he starts controlling your life and tells you how long or short your skirt should be, who you should be talking, who you should be meeting and who you should not be meeting, run as fast and as far as you can because that is the kind of man who will turn out to be a perpetrator.”

Ali says as a community there’s a need to work together to save our sisters, mothers, and daughters.

She adds awareness needs to be created in the community and at a district level.
