Specialty services to tackle NCD: Tukana

The Government is improving specialty services in the country to tackle lifestyle diseases and challenges.

National Advisor for Non-Communicable disease, Dr Isimeli Tukana while responding to queries during a workshop on Non-Communicable Diseases.

Tukana says several steps are being taken to tackle rising cases of NCD amongst adults and children.

“We are also working on policy, we now have a school health policy that targets school children all over Fiji and is moving towards creating a healthier environment for children. One of the examples is the school health policy, the canteen policy where we are working with schools and education ministry to improve what is being sold in the school canteens.The Government is improving specialty services in the country so that it looks at dealing with people who come in with the complications of diabetes and kidney diseases and all that. "

Meanwhile, according to Pacific NCD and Health Team Coordinator, Dr Wendy Snowdon, child obesity is also a major concern.
