Special Constable Julie Tuikenawa has described this morning’s attack at the Delainavesi Community Post in Lami as one of the most terrifying experiences in her policing career.

Constable Tuikenawa was on duty at the time when a woman came running to ask for assistance as her partner had allegedly threatened her.

Tuikenawa says her immediate concern was to place the woman in a safe room as the suspect had pursued her to the Community Post after the alleged confrontation between them.

While doing so she heard sounds and she saw the suspect wielding a cane knife and smashing the railings of the post.

The Officer says the suspect was hurling abuse at her for interfering in their personal matter and continued to smash the windows and doors of the Post.

The officer says she was able to assist the suspect’s partner escape into the nearby mangrove swamp before jumping out of a window and onto the water tank where the suspect is alleged to have swung a knife narrowly missing her leg.

Being unarmed, her first instinct was to pick up stones to defend herself.

The officer was able to wave down a passing Police vehicle who then stopped to assist her.

Officers from Totogo and Lami police station along with officers nearby arrived at the scene.

The situation was diffused with the assistance of the Divisional Police Commander South and the suspect’s father, and as a result, no injuries were sustained.

However, the Delainavesi Community Post was extensively damaged.

The suspect was allegedly drunk at the time of the incident and is now in custody at the Lami Police Station as investigation continues.
