Speaker to attend Women Speakers of Parliament meet

Speaker of the House Dr Jiko Luveni will be travelling to New York later today to attend the 10th meeting of Women Speakers of parliament.

The meeting organized by the IPU, will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

The Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, will take place from the 31 to 2 September following the meeting,

The meeting will identify new and concrete strategies to speed up the process of achieving gender equality, 20 years after the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action.

By so doing it will also identify ways to ensure implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to make societies more democratic and peaceful.

To mark this tenth anniversary, the women Speakers of Parliament will also look back at the outcomes of previous sessions and progress made so far.

These meetings aim to provide women in the highest decision-making positions of parliament with a regular forum to exchange ideas and experiences on gender issues which are of interest to their national and international agendas.

Deputy Speaker Rupeni Nadalo will sit in this afternoon and tomorrow’s session in her place.
