Speaker of Parliament has dismissed the motion brought up by Opposition and National Federation Party President Pio Tikoduadua.

Ratu Epeli Nailatikau says the motion by Tikoduadua to amend the Sugar Industry Amendment Act 2015 cannot be entertained.

Speaking at length on the motion, Ratu Epeli says a motion on its own authority cannot amend or repeal primary legislation.

“For parliament to exercise its lawmaking authority under the constitution is through the enactment of bills and the second is that such process is not complete without the present of the President.”

While making the clarification, Ratu Epeli also reminded the Opposition Members to provide accurate questions and motions in parliament.

The Speaker further advising all MPs to do more adequate and further research when dealing with the law.

Meanwhile, Tikoduadua and fellow NFP member Lenora Qereqeretabua walked out of parliament following the Speakers dismissal.

Tikoduadua has since told FBC News that he will make a media statement once the current session ends in line with the recent amendments of the standing orders.
