SPC emphasises on food quality and hygiene standards

Efforts are underway to educate exporters on the benefits of following the Food Safety Regulations 2009 and the Food Safety Act 2003.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Community organised a workshop in this regards for Fiji’s key stakeholders.

Stakeholders got a chance to express their views on ways to improve food regulation.

Food Scientist Professor Richard Beyer says changes are prevalent in the market so there is a need to cut down on incidents on food related problems.

’’Consumers to retailers to manufacturers probably most importantly to the tourism industry because it’s very important for Fiji to gain a reputation of producing high quality safe food."

Health, Agriculture, Fisheries representatives and exporters were part of the discussions to improve the quality of export food commodities.

SPC says the country can export food to a number of other countries with high demand but only if we can meet their strict quality and hygiene standards.
