Son cops four years over father’s death

A 22-year-old man convicted of manslaughter for the death of his father in 2015 has been sentenced to four years imprisonment.

Avinaash Kamal in a fit of anger threw a lit kerosene stove onto his father – 40-year-old Amresh Kamal in Nadi in 2015.

While sentencing the young man, high court judge stated that he breached the trust of his father by assaulting him and the pain and suffering was prolonged.

The Judge also stated that the court denounced any form of family violence.

The court heard that on 2nd December, 2015, the two had an argument and Avinaash threw a burning stove at his father.

The deceased suffered third-degree burns on his entire body and was hospitalized for about six weeks, but developed pneumonia and bacterial infections before he succumbed to his wounds.

The post mortem revealed the cause of death was clots in vessels that pumped blood from his heart to his lungs, triggered by the burns.

Avinaash has 30 days to appeal.
